Getting Students on Track for Graduation: Impacts of the Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System After One Year

The Regional Educational Laboratory - Midwest conducted a randomized controlled trial of the Early Warning Intervention and Monitoring System (EWIMS) that included 73 high schools located in urban, suburban, and rural settings across three states. Hunters Point Research Partners founder, David Blumenthal, served as a key member of the project’s recruitment and implementation teams. David facilitated training sessions and delivered monthly coaching sessions on EWIMS for the two cohorts of schools as well as served as the implementation team lead. The study team found that schools that implemented the EWIMS process with fidelity for just one academic year experienced a statistically significant reduction in 9th grade students that were chronically absent or failing core courses. The study was a seminal work in generating evidence of effectiveness of early warning system implementation at scale.
